The Berkeley Cup - Honoring Legacies

The Berkeley Cup is one of the most meaningful annual traditions on the East End of Long Island, New York, honoring the legacies of two men who helped shape the game of golf in the local community — Rick Hartmann and Michael Berkeley.

Rick Hartmann, the longtime Head Professional and Director of Golf at Atlantic Golf Club, founded the event in 2000 as the East End Cup to celebrate the exceptional caddies from the outstanding clubs across eastern Long Island. Rick’s vision was both simple and profound: to honor the caddie tradition, bring together some of the most prestigious clubs in the country, and give caddies the opportunity to compete on a stage worthy of their talent and dedication.

The event was later renamed The Berkeley Cup in memory of Michael Berkeley, a beloved member of the East End golf community who tragically lost his life on September 11, 2001. Michael’s love for the game began at age 12, when he spent eight summers caddieng at Winged Foot Golf Club. He went on to become a member of Winged Foot, Atlantic, Hudson National, and Muirfield Village, where he was admired for his character and passion for the game.

Today, the Berkeley Cup stands as a living tribute to both Rick’s vision and Michael’s legacy. It continues to highlight the vital role caddies play in golf and has grown into one of the most celebrated and widely recognized caddie events in the world — a centerpiece of the East End golf season that brings together players, clubs, and supporters in a spirit of competition and community. The Berkeley Cup celebrates these legacies and supports the caddie community through scholarships and sponsorships awarded by the Michael J. Berkeley Foundation.

Beginning in 2025, the tournament will also present the Rick Hartmann Medalist Honor, awarded each year to the low medalist. On top of Rick’s qualities as a leader and professional, he was also, humbly, one of the finest players in the Metropolitan Section. His talent, determination, and respect for the game set a standard that inspired everyone around him — whether they were competing alongside him, learning under his guidance, or simply watching him play. The Medalist Honor ensures that Rick’s competitive spirit lives on, recognizing the best player in the field while celebrating the remarkable balance of humility, excellence, and leadership that defined his career.
